Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Marcher was last seen on April 4, 2004 in Velzyland, a park on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. She had moved there from Florida eight weeks before her disappearance, and was living with friends on Huelo Street in Velzyland. She started surfing at the beach five minutes away from her home with her friends at 6:45 a.m. that day.
Between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m., still in the water, she told them she was leaving. She has never been heard from again. Marcher's cellular phone, medication, and purse were left behind when she vanished, but her surfboard, a white six-foot Glen A. Klugel with a design of black stars around the edge, disappeared with her. One of her roommates reported her missing at 1:00 a.m. the following day.
On April 8, four days after Marcher vanished, her surfboard was found by fishermen three miles off of Ka'ena Point, about eighteen miles from the beach at Velzyland. A photograph of the board is posted with with case summary.
It was intact and in good condition, but the plastic leash Marcher used to tether herself to the board had been severed near the ankle end and had unusual serrated markings on it. Authorities believe the marks may have been caused by a shark bite or sharp coral. They stated that there were no signs of anything suspicious.
Investigators believe Marcher may have had an accident on the ocean. Her family initially thought she had been abducted. Her mother stated that Marcher would have put up a fight if she was attacked. Conditions at the beach where Marcher was last seen were clear, the waves were small, and there were several people present.
Marcher graduated from Satellite High School in Florida with honors, and got an associate's degree from Brevard Community College. She was working several part-time jobs at the time of her disappearance, and planned to become a permanent resident of Hawaii, She planned to join a professional surfing team, get a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii, and ultimately become a reporter or a teacher. She is described as a friendly, outgoing person.
Her family held a memorial service for her in July 2004. Foul play is not suspected in her case, but her body has never been found.

A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 25% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. Several organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and imAge at the time of disappearance: s of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.
