Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Tresp departed from her daughter's residence in Stillwater, Oklahoma on August 31, 1998. She was planning to drive to a religious retreat at a Benedictine monastery near Pecos, New Mexico. It has been established that Tresp purchased gasoline at a station in Santa Rosa, New Mexico at approximately 3:00 p.m. that day. She was familiar with the route to the monastery.
Tresp's white four-door 1997 Honda Civic with the Arkansas license plates number 672-AOK was discovered locked and abandoned on forestry road 63A near the Glorieta/Pecos, New Mexico area later in the day. This location is approximately 10 to 15 miles from Route 63. Tresp's car became lodged on a large rock in the road, which had cracked the oil pan.
Authorities believe she walked away from the vehicle to get help, but it is unclear where she headed. Extensive searches of the area produced no clues as to Tresp's whereabouts. She has never been heard from again. Her purse disappeared with her and has never been found, but all her other belongings were inside the car.
When Tresp's children found out she never arrived at the monastery, they all traveled to New Mexico and began searching for her. They called hospitals to see whether she had had an accident and suffered memory loss, passed out fliers, and searched the route looking for Tresp's car. They reported her missing on September 8 after their search proved unsuccessful.
Tresp was a resident of North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1998. She was a deeply religious Catholic and enjoyed traveling. Her family stated she was mentally sharp, but she got lost easily when she was driving. Her disappearance remains unsolved.

September 2021 updates and sources

A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 25% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. Several organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and imAge at the time of disappearance: s of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.
