Distinguishing characteristics, birthmarks, tattoos : Caucasian female. Brown hair, green eyes. Hayes's nickname is Margie. She is very near-sighted and wears contact lenses, but at the time of her disappearance she could only have them in her eyes for a few hours at a time.





Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Hayes was last seen at 11:00 p.m. on March 10, 1977, when she left her home in the 700 block of Atwater Street in Bloomington, Indiana. She planned to purchase a pack of cigarettes and had the cash on her to do so. She never returned to her rooming house.
Hayes left behind all her clothes, her luggAge at the time of disappearance: , her checkbook, and her Indiana University student identification card. Her apartment was in an orderly condition when she left it.
It has been established that Hayes bought cigarettes at the Caveat Emptor store (now a Starbucks coffee shop) on Indiana Avenue, four blocks from her home, on the evening of her disappearance. She was never heard from again after that.
Hayes had completed seven semesters at Indiana University at the time of her disappearance, majoring in social services. She was unsure as to whether she wanted to continue with that major and had taken a semester off to decide whether to complete her degree or start again with another major.
She was working three days a week as a housekeeper to meet her expenses. Hayes's family in Fort Wayne, Indiana last saw her in January 1977, and she last spoke to them on the telephone on February 10.
Investigators are not sure what happened to Hayes. Her loved ones describe her as a quiet person who would be unlikely to get into a stranger's car. Her case remains unsolved.

A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 2�5% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends.
