Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Melvin was last seen in Parkman, Ohio on April 11, 1994. He left his vehicles behind, but his wallet and keys disappeared with him. He has never been heard from again. He left behind approximately $700,000 in assets. Foul play is suspected in his case.
Prior to his disappearance, Melvin had a difficult relationship with his son, Glenn Roger Shoemaker. He had nearly been fired from his manufacturing job in 1978, after he missed work because his son and wife locked him in the house. He was tied up and chained in the basement multiple times that month. At one point he escaped, but Glenn caught up with him in the driveway, sprayed him in the face with mace, and threatened to kill him and hide his body where no one would ever find it.
Before his disappearance, Melvin lead an "almost hermit-like existence" at his home on Route 422. He had no telephone or television, but was a good neighbor who helped out in the neighborhood. A neighbor told the police after he hadn't seen Melvin for six days, but Glenn didn't report him missing for a much longer time period.
Several months after Melvin disappeared, police searched Glenn's home looking for evidence in his father's disappearance. They found eleven guns and a large amount of ammunition, but nothing indicating Melvin's whereabouts.
Melvin's wife, Florence, was last seen in the Ravenna, Ohio area on February 3, 2003. She was 76 years old at the time of her disappearance, which occurred almost a decade after Melvin's.
It's unclear whether the Shoemakers' cases are related, but in September 2018, police searched Glenn's farm on Winchell Road in Hiram Township, Ohio, looking for evidence in both cases. He has not been charged or named as a suspect in either of his parents' cases. Their disappearances remain unsolved.

September 2021 updates and sources

A missing person is a person who has disappeared and whose status as alive or dead cannot be confirmed as their location and condition are not known. A person may go missing through a voluntary disappearance, or else due to an accident, crime, death in a location where they cannot be found (such as at sea), or many other reasons. In most parts of the world, a missing person will usually be found quickly. While criminal abductions are some of the most widely reported missing person cases, these account for only 25% of missing children in Europe. By contrast, some missing person cases remain unresolved for many years. Laws related to these cases are often complex since, in many jurisdictions, relatives and third parties may not deal with a person's assets until their death is considered proven by law and a formal death certificate issued. The situation, uncertainties, and lack of closure or a funeral resulting when a person goes missing may be extremely painful with long-lasting effects on family and friends. Several organizations seek to connect, share best practices, and disseminate information and imAge at the time of disappearance: s of missing children to improve the effectiveness of missing children investigations, including the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), as well as national organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the US, Missing People in the UK, Child Focus in Belgium, and The Smile of the Child in Greece.
